Dear Moderator

Dear Moderator, my brief for my AS Media was to create a front cover, content page and double page spread for a new music magazine. I chose Indie as my genre as I believe this is a fast growing genre, gaining mega popularity. I wanted to give the preferred audience, young women, a new and up to date magazine in which they can effectively be a pro-sumer and voice their views on what my magazine will contain.

I have ordered my work as well as referring to labels in order to make it easier for you to read.

yours sincerely,

Question 2 - How does your media product represent a partiular social group?

Question 2 – How does your media product represent a particular social group?

Image

The image on the left is my own image that I used for the front cover of my magazine. The image on the right is a front cover image from Indie magazine that I got inspiration from. I chose to comment on these 2 photos as I believe they both intrigue the same social group.

Posture/pose

Although these images are seen to be very different, in many ways they are in fact extremely similar. For my own image I told Izzy to do a fierce pose. To do this I told her to look to the side and tilt her head to the left. It gives her the look of fierceness and carelessness which is what I wanted to go for within my magazine. I 2anted a sense of confidence to be shown in my magazine and I think Izzy portrayed this well. I took inspiration from the image on the right which is a well-known published Indie magazine. In this image, the model is tilting her head up as well as being incorporated in funky props. This also gives the look of seriousness and confidence.

Props/makeup

In my image, I didn’t feel the need to use props because I wanted my magazine to be unique and different to other indie magazines. Instead of using props, I wanted to use slightly heavy makeup on Izzy. This is because I thought it would make her look a lot more confident and stand out. I believe both of these images stand out together because they are different. Even though the image on the right has many green hair and big sunglasses on, I still believe they are as unique as each other.

Shot Type

Both images left and right are a mid-shot image. I believe this is the most suitable shot to use because it allows the models to be highlighted from the rest of the front cover. It is close enough to allow it to be seen easily but not too close where it takes up the whole age, leaving plenty of room to include other features.

How does this relate to social groups?

In many aspects I believe my magazine relates to a particular social group. This is because using an image of a young adult looking fierce and confident gives women a sense of power. As well as the colour scheme and story line, it does so in a way that is subtle but allows others to want to read the magazine too.

Question 1 - In what way does your media product use, deveop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation Plan

Evaluation Plan

Question 1 – In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

What am I going to include?

  • List of each feature I have used on the front cover, content page and double page spread
  • The reasons as to why I included these features
  • Detail about the features and why they were made to look specifically the way they do

What software will I use?

For the first question I am going to use Prezi. This is because I have a strong understanding of how to use the software therefore I won’t find this task difficult. Another reason as to why I want to use Prezi is because it presents information clearly and is a less boring way of reading information.

Question 2 – How does your media product represent particular social groups?

What am I going to include?

  • List of each feature that could represent a social group characteristic e.g. clothing
  • How I have presented different groups in society e.g. age, gender
  • What social group does it related to specifically and why it does so

What software will I use?

For this question I am going to use Padlet to present my information. This is because it gives a clear over view of my information and even though there will be a lot of writing it doesn’t give the appearance of a busy or crowded look.

Question 3 – what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What am I going to include?

  • 3 examples of potential institutions to distribute my magazine
    IPC Media
    Bauer
    EMAP
  • Why I will use these institutions
  • Benefits and negatives of using these institutions

What software will I use?

For this question I am going to use piktochart as my software to present the information for this question. This is because it can present information clearly and allow readers to have a clear understanding of what I am trying to present. It has efficient tools and is attractive to look at which can help keep the examiner interested.

Question 4 and 5 – who would be the audience for your product and how have you attracted/addressed them?

What am I going to include?

  • Who my target audience are
  • Why I chose this age range
  • What research I did to find an age range for my magazine
  • What I created to ensure my product relates to the age range

What software will I use?

For this question I am going to us Animoto as my software to present my information. This is because it varies between the other software I have used and it is a less boring way of presenting my work. It is also a quick and easy way to create a presentation.

Question 6 – what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

What am I going to include?

  • What technologies I used e.g. serif, survey monkey, word, Prezi, camera
  • Explain what these technologies are
  • What have I discovered about these technologies

What software will I use?

For this question I am going to use PowToon. This is because it allows me to present my work in a less boring and dull way. There are many features such as animations and variety of colour so it can stand out from the rest of the questions and keep the examiner intrigued.

Question 7 – looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

What am I going to include?

  • List of each thing I have learnt from start to end
  • Did I find this difficult?
  • Show examples

What software will I use?

For this question I am going to use google slide to present information. This is because it is a quick and simple way to present work without it looking dull.

LAYOUT IDEAS

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/f3/c4/8d/f3c48dacc6419e5d740ab86eb5d9dcd7.jpgThis is effective layout for multiple reasons. This front cover in particular does not include most of the features you would see on a magazine cover. The main thing that stands out in this is the image and the masthead. I think this is a good way to layout an indie magazine for multiple reasons. This is because it is very simple but it does not mean it is boring or dull. There is also another title placed at the bottom right of the magazine. The less writing there is the more it stands out because the magazine is not overpowering or overwhelming to the reader which is important.
I like how they title is placed in the center and that it is large because it stands out the most. Again it is simple looking but still effective and can easily intrigue the reader to want to buy the magazine. .

The layout of this double page spread is also very effective. The fact that there isn’t a lot of writing again shows how contemporary the magazine is. The picture on the right also takes up the whole page which isn’t usual for a magazine. The features on this page are very spaced out which gives it that modern look. The image also contrasts well with the page next to it on the left because it allows each page to stand out.
